Accelerate into a Greener Future with WhipCar, the World's First Neighbour-to-Neighbour Car Rental Service

London, UK April 23, 2010 It is now possible to make greater use of a car,

whilst actually being more environmentally friendly. This may sound too good to be true, but with WhipCar's innovative new peer-to-peer rental service, users can put their car to work, reduce their carbon footprint and earn money. Alternatively, for those looking for a car to drive, WhipCar provides users with a convenient and affordable new way of hiring a car based in their local area - and they can pat themselves on the back for going green in the process.

According to The New Scientist, the average car in the UK is used for only an hour per day, even though it costs around £5,523 per year to own (RAC Cost of Motoring Index 2009). It is clear, then, that as a country we are not making most efficient use of our cars - which is where WhipCar comes in.

WhipCar was created by co-founders Vinay Gupta and Tom Wright, who recognised that unused cars could be made use of in a greener and more cost-effective way. If just a few people choose to rent the car next door (http://www.whipcar.com), the number of cars in circulation will decrease, which means a greener future for driving. What's more, owners can earn money from renting their vehicle. It is a modern and practical facility, stemming from the natural evolution of traditional car hire companies.

WhipCar provides an easy-to-use online service that takes on only fully vetted drivers and totally safe cars, and includes a newly-developed, comprehensive insurance package. Signing up only takes a few minutes in a simple, accessible format, all done from the comfort of home - and the car can be picked up from just round the corner!

WhipCar's founders are dedicated to providing the safest and best quality service possible. Consequently, every stage of the renting service is vetted to ensure complete security and legitimacy for both owner and driver. All cars are subject to rigorous safety checks and all drivers are screened, and the price and timing of rentals are put in complete control of the owner.

New Program to Produce 1,200 Propane Autogas Vehicles and 17 Refueling Stations in Southeast

Washington April 23, 2010 A new program to build propane refueling stations and convert 1,200 vehicles to propane kicked off with a meeting at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., last weekend.

With $8.6 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program, coordinated by Alliance AutoGas and supported by the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), will enhance energy security, promote a domestic alternative fuel, and create a cleaner environment by converting gasoline-powered vehicles to run on propane and by installing at least 17 propane refueling stations across nine southeast states. Propane, when it is used to run on-road vehicles, is known worldwide as autogas.

Virginia Clean Cities, part of the nationwide network of Clean Cities Coalitions working to reduce petroleum consumption, and James Madison University will act as project managers. Alliance AutoGas’ founding partners, Blossman Gas and American Alternative Fuel, and certified conversion partners, will perform the vehicle conversions and provide both public and private fueling infrastructure. Vehicles in public and private fleets, including taxis, limousines, and vans, will be converted to run on propane.

"We are encouraged that this grant provides an opportunity to showcase the viability of autogas and its benefits," said Stuart Weidie, president of Alliance AutoGas. "Autogas is recognized as the number one alternative fuel worldwide. It's almost entirely domestically produced and is available right here, right now."

The vehicles converted under this program are projected to displace more than 15 million gallons of gasoline over four years, and since propane vehicles experience significantly lower emissions than gasoline and diesel vehicles, the project will reduce harmful emissions. Nearly 90 percent of propane supplies are produced in the United States, and 7 percent come from Canada.

“The rollout of this Alliance AutoGas project will result in the wider use of propane vehicles, which will help us reach our county’s environmental and national energy security goals,” said Brian Feehan, vice president of PERC.

The Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program will track the results of the conversions, including the number of gasoline gallons displaced and greenhouse gas emissions avoided. A comprehensive public website will be launched later in 2010 to display the details of the project.
